5th Francophone Games come to an end
Morocco TIMES 12/19/2005 | 7:29 pm

Ten days of competition in Niamey saw the Francophone Games produce little joy for Moroccans. Only the athletes saved the country's honour, taking gold, silver and bronze medals in many events.

The under-20 football team, defeated by Senegal and Angola, made a premature exit. This was disappointing, in view of their recent good international performances. Other team sports, such as basket-ball, handball and volley-ball did not last long either.

However, Moroccan athletes redeemed the day. In addition to previous medals, the gold in the marathon was won by Rachid Kisri with a new record for the Games. Kisri was followed by Zayed Laâroussi and Abderrahim Bouramdan, to make up a winning Moroccan trio.

In the 1.500m event, Morocco made a clean sweep with Bensghir, Baba and Maâzouzi taking the first three places.

Moroccan's women athletes were up to standard too. After taking the 1.500m, Seltana Aït Hammou won the gold in the 800m, while Saïda Mehdi took the bronze. Zhor El Kamch completed a double victory, with gold medals in the 10.000 m and 5.000 m events.
