Gharib, twice marathon world
champion, topped the list with 85
points, followed by his countryman
Hicham El Guerrouj, double Olympic
champion in 1,500 and 5,000m, who
dominated the title for nine times,
including eight years in a row.
Besides his second world title last
August in Helsinki, Gharib also stood on
the second step of the podium in the
London marathon last April.
He also outranked Adil El Kaouch (31
points), silver winner in 1,500 m in the
Helsinki world championship, and
Marouane Chammakh (28 points), Moroccan
soccer national team and Bordeaux
(France) striker.
For women, 800 m silver winner in
Helsinki, Hasna Benhassi, was enthroned
for the second time in a row as the best
sportswoman, outranking Samira El
Haddad, kickboxing and full contact
world champion, and Wiaam Dslam, African
Taekwondo junior champion and silver
medallist in the third world
Francophonie championship in Niamey,
Niger.
