Morocco shifts to daylight time on June 1st through September 27, Govt. spokesman
Rabat, May.8 - Morocco will shift to daylight
saving time on June 1st through September 27, 2008, Moroccan Communication Minister and Government spokesman said on Thursday.
Speaking at a press briefing following the weekly cabinet meeting, Mr. Khalid Naciri said this decision "will enable to save energy and adapts the time zone to the relations between Morocco and its regional and international partners, including European Union countries."
Pushing the clock ahead one hour is meant to alleviate the impact of the soaring energy bill of the north African country.
According to figures released recently by Morocco's Office des Changes (exchange office), the north African country's imports of crude oil in the first quarter of 2008 reached USD 1.1Bn, i.e. a 68.9% increase compared to the same period in 2007.
The increase in the oil bill is ascribed to the rise in international crude oil prices; the average price of an imported ton increased by 54.5% from USD 458.5/T to USD 708/T in 2008.
